Hill House in Chappel Hill, Essex

This place provides yet another gem of a Bed and Breakfast accommodation which is within reach from the city limits easily, but also far away enough to detach, wind down, and enjoy some country life.

Hill House is run by a small family with children and animals and while privacy is thoroughly respected, you can be forgiven for thinking that you have been adopted, especially by the lovable dogs.

The building itself is rich in history and was formerly a coach house. The owners have really turned it into something special though, it is bright and airy, but retains a great deal of antique furniture and ceiling beams that give it plenty of character.

The entrance hall is on the ground floor while the upstairs has been converted into a stunning open plan living and bedroom area. There are no gardens, but the bedroom has a balcony which offers stunning views of the Colne Valley that spreads out before you.

The living area also includes television, double beds, sofas and it is the perfect setting for a lazy bottle of wine to be enjoyed after a day out trekking in the countryside. If you form part of a bigger group, this B&B has a great selection of board games, but if you just want some peace and quiet, you can just read a book without interruption.

Breakfast is a truly hearty affair with bacon, eggs and all the trimmings you would expect from the British countryside. The owners make their own meat products from animals that are fed organically from their own adjacent farm.

The old coach house is far enough into the country to let you relax completely, but if you fancy a day trip with a bit more activity, you could head to Cambridge, which is about two hours’ drive in favourable traffic.
